We're all aware of the current turmoil in the American economy. Many companies and higher education institutions are responding to the downturn with large-scale downsizing involving significant layoffs and major cutbacks in services. Regis is by no means immune to these current economic challenges, but at the same time I want you to know that we are managing our budgets wisely to ensure we can continue to meet student needs and position the University for a strong future.

Did you know that if we made a copy of our solar system to scale and Jupiter were the size of the period at the end of this sentence, Pluto would be 35 feet away from the sun? This fact scares the crap out of me. There is so much space out there. And it is filled with so little.

This Perspectives piece was published in the January 26 issue of the Highlander. The election of Barack Obama brings about a new hope for the American public; a refreshing sense of confidence in our government and security for our nation.
As spring break quickly approaches, I would like to take a look at a cost cutting alternative to dropping a good 'ole Hamilton and a half on a lousy sandwich. (That's $15 for the disinclined in monetary presidential knowledge.) My guess is that many folks will be hitting the slopes over the break, and costs add up, especially with the country's current economic status.

King, the man who has had a reputation, going way back to the 1960's, for being known as the "King of the Blues." But B.B. wasn't the only influential blues musician to bear the last name "king.

Every morning Gina Graziano wakes up and has a bowl of cereal. After cleaning her dishes and continuing her morning routine, she does one last thing before class: she recycles. When her cereal box is empty, Graziano makes sure to flatten it and put in her recycling bin. Cardboard, she says, is one of the main things she recycles.
This story was originally published on November 7, 2006. Regis University currently lacks a formal recycling program. Michael Redmond, associate vice-president of Physical Plant, believes that having one on campus isn't impossible, however. He stressed that with a strong student initiative, Regis has the potential to run a successful recycling program.

The Berkeley Native

Many of our neighbors have lived their entire lives in the Berkeley neighborhood. They have seen the development and change of the area, living and raising their families in a neighborhood they have come to call their own. This urban area was once a small town with little to no development. Now it is not only a diverse neighborhood, but one with plenty of Denver history. Everything and everyone here has a story. If we only take the time to listen, and really see the neighborhood, we can learn that there is definitely more than meets the eye. After all, we cannot simply judge an area, or the people who live there, by just looking quickly. Living as we ought implies an active participation in the world. We need to ask about the history of the place in which we live in order to know how to live there as equal members of a community.

These stories, told from some of the neighborhood's first members, focus on the area west of Lowell between 50th and 52nd Avenues, the area near Regis Place, Willis Case Golf Course, and El Jabel Shrine. These stories were written as part of the In-Depth Reporting and Writing course. As examples of narrative and explanatory journalism, these articles purposefully use first names throughout, in order to create a sense of neighborly connection.
